Hire a Musician or Artist
The NIU College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) connects those looking to hire entertainment for events with talented student musicians and artists. The Hire a Musician or Artist program at NIU is a referral service intended for paid events. Those seeking volunteer musicians and artists can email firstname.lastname@example.org with a flier to be posted.
To hire an NIU student artist or musician for your event, follow the following guidelines (note: NIU departments must contact HR Student Employment at 815-753-1394 before hiring a student performer/artist to determine if the student is already an NIU employee. If this is the case, paperwork will be necessary to compensate the student through the NIU payroll system).
- Fill out the form below and include details about the date, time and location of your event, as well as what type of musician or artist you are looking to fulfill your entertainment needs.
- The NIU CVPA cannot guarantee that musicians or artists will be available or willing to perform for your event.
- Once a musician or artist has been identified for your event, you will be contacted by the musician or artist and the NIU CVPA’s involvement is typically completed.
- The terms and conditions of the performance/artwork are negotiated and payment transactions are completed directly between you and the musician, artist or group representative.
As a general guideline, you can expect to hire student musicians or artists at the rate of $75-$100 per musician/artist, per hour. These rates are negotiable and depend upon details such as length of event, distance artist must travel etc.
Students accept engagements as freelance artists, not as employees of NIU or clients. Payments are made directly to the student.
In accordance with applicable statutes and regulations, NIU is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, religion, age, physical and mental disability, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, political affiliation, or any other factor unrelated to professional qualifications, and will comply with all applicable federal and state statutes, regulations and orders pertaining to nondiscrimination, equal opportunity and affirmative action.
